Such atrocities should never even enter the mind of man, but because sin is rampant in this world, unfortunately, they do. What’s even more excruciating to understand is that this incident of rape and massacre really happened in the 1840s in the country I call my earthly home. It was very clear what happened, but it wasn’t written in a way that turned my stomach more than necessary at the shock of the brutal behavior of certain folks within the story. While the events of this massacre were atrocious, the author handled them with grace and kept the gory details to a minimum. What I wasn’t expecting was to learn about a heartbreaking piece of American history: the Whitman Incident. As I’ve come to expect with Tracie Peterson’s books, this one delivered a faith-rich, emotion-filled journey that wrenched my heart yet filled it with hope at the same time. From beginning to end, I was deeply invested in this novel. I enjoyed the first installment of this trilogy and look forward to reading the rest and how Mercy and Hope settle into the wild frontiers of Oregon.
